Expert view: The future of cell expansion for monoclonal antibody production

There is room for improvement in the production of monoclonal antibodies; commercial production needs increased process efficiency and reduced costs.
Cell expansion begins with thawing a vial of banked cells in a shake flask and is followed by several passages through more shake flasks until enough biomass has been accumulated to seed the bioreactor. Biosafety cabinets are required for passaging as flask lids need to be removed during passage. Transfers are done by hand, usually with serological pipettes. Work in a biosafety cabinet is discouraged due to the high demand on labour and facilities.
